Layer 2
A Layer 2 is a system built on top of a base chain that processes activity off the base chain while relying on it for security, typically so users can exit without trusting the operator. Rollups and payment channels such as Lightning are Layer 2s; sidechains with their own validator sets usually are not, because users must trust those validators.
