Counterparty risk
Counterparty risk is the risk that the other side of an arrangement fails to meet its obligations. In crypto the counterparty is often implicit: an exchange holding customer assets, a stablecoin issuer, a custodian behind an ETF or tokenized asset, or the signers of a bridge. Much of crypto market structure is an attempt to reduce or relocate this risk.
