An oracle is the mechanism that brings off-chain information, most often asset prices, onto a blockchain so contracts can act on it. Lending markets, perpetuals, and prediction markets all depend on oracles, which makes stale, manipulable, or ambiguously defined data one of the most common paths to losses in DeFi.
