Slashing
Slashing is a protocol-enforced penalty that destroys part of a validator's stake when it provably misbehaves, for example by signing two conflicting blocks. It is what makes proof-of-stake security costly to attack: misbehavior has to be detectable, attributable, and punishable from collateral that is still at risk.
